to acknowledge the receipt of your. letter of the 6th instant, informing him, by direction of Learetary Lord Knutsford, that a higher

rate of pay than that previously proposed may, if necessary, be offered in order to obtain volunteers from the Prison Lervice for employment at Hong Hong; and I am to acquaint you, for his Lordship's information,

that my mathews received on the god instant

a report from the Chairman of the Prison Board to the effect that enquiries had

been made at all the male Convict Prisons

and at the large Local Prisons, but that applicants for the posts in on the terms stated. There
